Graddon Vending: Generations of Success

Evidence that the UK vending industry continues to thrive is demonstrated by the number of 2nd, 3rd and even 4th generation businesses that are going from strength to strength. A case in point was clear from the announcement just a few weeks ago from the South-West of England. David Graddon of Graddon Vending Ltd has decided to hand the reins of running the business over to the next generation of the family.

This is a business founded in 1940 by David’s grandfather, Victor Harold Graddon (originally the business was known as V.H Graddon), who had the foresight to get involved with milk vending. After converting the bottling machine at his dairy factory to fill milk cartons, he sold these cartons in refrigerated vending machines in public areas around Plymouth, pioneering vending in the South-West of England. In the 84 years since those early efforts, Graddon Vending remains the premier vending operator in that part of the country.
I asked David Graddon what the secrets to such a success were, he told me, “Three things come to mind. First of all, a genuine commitment to giving good, consistent customer service. Happy customers stick around. The second factor is staying at the forefront of technology. We have come a long way from vending milk cartons, but that was cutting edge in its day. The principle remains the same and we constantly strive to be at the sharp end of available developments. We still pride ourselves on being a pioneering company, ensuring that we’re always up-to-date on the latest advancements in the vending industry. Thirdly, a lot of hard work.”
David himself remains involved with the business as Chairman and he has appointed his son, Chris Graddon and his son-in-law, David Youldon as joint Managing Directors. Both are supported by an experienced team, many with over 20 years of service.
Speaking on the appointment, David Youldon has commented: “I’m absolutely thrilled to step into the role of Managing Director at Graddon Vending alongside Chris. This family business has always meant a lot to me, and I’m really excited about what lies ahead.
Looking forward, I’m excited to lead our team into a new chapter of innovation in vending. With the launch of micro markets, smart fridges, and a stronger focus on customer engagement, we’re not just following industry trends, we’re creating them.
The integration of Televend into our operations is a game-changer, allowing us to harness AI-driven data insights to improve efficiency and better serve our customers. This technology will enable us to predict consumer needs, streamline our processes, increase machine efficiency, and elevate the entire vending experience. I’m looking forward to continuing our journey of growth and transformation, ensuring that Graddon Vending remains at the forefront of the industry.”

Chris Graddon is honoured to step into his father’s shoes alongside David Youldon, stating: It’s an honour to be taking on the role of Joint Managing Director of Graddon Vending. Between myself and Dave we have big shoes to fill, but we know that we have a great team around us to keep progressing as a company and building on the success we have seen under dad’s leadership.
Having started out as a part time Operator in 2006, I have seen significant development in how we operate as a company and I am excited for the new challenge. I feel truly privileged for the opportunity to lead the company into the next chapter of our 80 year history alongside Dave.
Now it’s time for dad to start taking his golf more seriously and try and get his handicap down towards mine!
This a great story for us all to take a lot of confidence from. A fourth-generation vending business continuing to thrive and help drive the vending industry forward. I am sure you join me in congratulating the Graddon family and wishing them continued success.
